Kentucky pastor Desiree Youngblood wrote a great piece on ethical wills this month for Horizons Magazine, the magazine for Presbyterian women. She helps her readers imagine themselves creating a legacy letter by asking them to answer the question of why they are writing. She offers this list to consider:

I am writing this ethical will because:

I love you.

I want to share my values and beliefs with you.

I want to share my life stories with you.

I want to share my dreams and hopes f...

Keep on reading: The Wealth of Your Life guidebook featured as a resource in December Horizons Magazine

It was a privilege to be interviewed today by Appreciative Inquiry expert and coach Ed Jacobson. You can listen to the audio here. A good interview can bring new insights to the person being interviewed, and that's happened today when Ed quoted - or paraphrased - poet Ed Whyte who said, "You know you have found your calling when you have discovered the kinds of conversations you want to be in. "

I loved this quote. As I said at the close of the interview today, it speaks directly to why I d...

Keep on reading: “Open Mic” interview prompts reflections on good conversation

Reflections on a long season away

These last few months I have stood witness to the best and worst of life: the joyful wedding of our son, followed by the sudden illness and death of my mother. Being that I am in the "words" business and the "wisdom" business, I feel a certain pressure to make sense of these events and articulate a thoughtful response.

But this is all that I know: no one has a lock on "wisdom." It comes and it goes, as we learn the main lesson of life over and over again.

What is that primary lesson? Tha...

Keep on reading: Reflections on a long season away

An analysis of the May, 2010 study conducted by Advisor Impact called the "Anatomy of the Referral" has just been published. In a survey of 1,000 financial services clients, they attempt to define the key elements of what they call an "engaged" client, one that is not only identified as being 1) loyal to their financial advisor, 2) satisfied with the services they are getting from their advisor, and lastly and most importantly 3) one who refers that advisor to others.
More on Listening

I got many responses to my email newsletter on the topic of listening, namely, the difference it makes to the quality of thinking on the part of the person who is doing the speaking. I have several wonderful links to share that shed truly insightful light onto this "easier said than done" habit of being. First, is a set of listening strategies from Nancy Kline, author of Time to Think and More Time to Think, and the woman who inspired me to write the piece to begin with.

Second is an absolute...

Keep on reading: More on Listening

Gunther Weil on Values

I heard a fascinating presentation on the subject of values today, given by Value Mentor's founder Gunther Weil, who has taken his expertise in the human and organizational development, and in the years when most everyone else retires, has begun to apply it to families, especially families of wealth seeking to maintain healthy family systems in addition to healthy family balance sheets.

One aspect of his comments that I found especially provocative, and relevant to my work helping people part...

Keep on reading: Gunther Weil on Values

Quality of Listening

Nancy Kline is author of Time to Think:Listening to Ignite the Human Mind and More Time to Think: A Way of Being in the World. I heard her speak today on a webinar and was very moved, not only by what she said, but the quiet, wise manner in which she said it. Her primary point is that the quality of attention we give when we listen to our friends, family members and clients has a direct impact on the quality of their thinking - to come to their own ah-ah moments and to think for themselves....

Keep on reading: Quality of Listening
